A Practical Guide to Cigars
Learn the fundamentals of cigar construction, sizes, wrappers, strength, storage and accessories. The North Stag Cigar Guide is designed as an educational resource for adult cigar enthusiasts in Brockville and the surrounding area.
Cigar Anatomy
Every premium cigar is made from three main components:
Wrapper
The outer leaf that gives the cigar much of its appearance and character.
Binder
The leaf that holds the filler together and helps maintain structure.
Filler
The inner tobacco leaves that influence flavour, strength and combustion.
Common Cigar Sizes
Cigars come in many shapes and sizes, but a few are especially common:
Robusto – short and balanced
Toro – slightly longer with a fuller experience
Churchill – longer format with extended smoking time
Corona – slimmer and more traditional
Torpedo – tapered head for a more focused draw
Wrapper Types
The wrapper has a major effect on a cigar’s look and character.
Connecticut – lighter in colour and often milder
Habano – richer, spicier and more full-flavoured
Maduro – darker, naturally sweeter and deeper in profile
Corojo – aromatic, bold and often slightly peppery
Humidity & Storage
Proper cigar storage helps preserve condition and smoking quality. A quality humidor, stable humidity and proper temperature all help protect cigars from drying out or becoming damaged over time.
Cigar Accessories
A good cigar experience often starts with the right tools.
Cutters – for a clean opening
Lighters – for an even light
Humidors – for proper storage
Cases & accessories – for travel and protection
